Take some classes in China and live there and you will learn it much faster. I have only been in China three weeks and I am not taking Mandarin, but I am learning new words every day and retaining them because I hear them so much.

If there are classes around your area, take them. Then after a few months of studying the language, do a language exchange of some sort with native speakers to keep up your level of vocabulary or even improve. If you can travel after that, even better.
